Dead Butt Syndrome - Yes, it's a real thing
This won't be relevant for busy Nurses and Physicians / Providers who are on their feet all day. This is a public service announcement for the work-from-home set.
After 14 months of working from home and sitting on a wooden chair for most of the day, perhaps you've experienced this as well: a perpetual sore butt. Maybe your first thought was to get a good seat cushion, or a new couch and maybe even a new mattress? But then you realize that your butt normally should not hurt by sitting down. That's one of it's chief functions!
So I did some research, and found articles on something called "dead butt syndrome," aka gluteal amnesia.
After reading up on it, I'm doing more stretchesduring the work day and have made it a point to get up more often. Moving more helps. Having a dog to walk helps, too.
We're due to be back on site in the physical libraries soon and I know many of us in the work-from-home set will be very glad to get back to our ergonomic chairs and desks. I've missed it, and my butt has, too!
This DPT offers some exercises to alleviate this pervasive pandemic problem for the work-from-home set. Yeah for Rehab for offering such practical solutions!
