Using the New AW Library Website: Using the Citation Matcher

The Citation Matcher can be found on our NEW AW Library home page.

The Citation Matcher is an exact article finder.

The Citation Matcher is used when searching for a specific article and requires enough information to locate it accurately. If you know DOI or PMID of an article you are searching, you can enter in the Citation Manager search box  or you can expand Citation Matcher, and enter Title, Author, Journal, etc.

Once you have entered enough information to uniquely identify one single article, select Match to bring up the result. You will be presented with a window offering you various methods of accessing the item.

Clicking on any of the Read Article links will bring you to a page from which you can access the full text of the item. In the event the full-text article is not available, you may be prompted to complete and submit a Document Delivery form to request access.

Using the New AW Library Website: Setting up a Personal Account and 3 Reasons Why You Might Want To

Personalize Your Experience on the new Ascension Wisconsin (AW) Library Website

Creating a user account is simple and offers the following benefits:

  1. Use the Discovery functions and the Library Services Request Form remotely.
  2. Your information will be saved and automatically added to fields when using forms, saving you time and typing.
  3. Save your searches, create Table-of-Contents Alerts, and bookmark frequently used resources.

NOTE: A TDNet / Library user account only affects the new AW Library web site.  Remote access to library resources still requires VPN or Citrix for authentication.

The process is simple:

  1. In the blue menu bar at the top of the page, find and click on SIGN UP
  2. Enter your first name, last name, email address, and choose a password -- Make it different from your usual network login.  These accounts are NOT linked in any way.
  3. Your TDNet account will automatically be activated if you use an ascension email.  If you chose to use your personal email, it has to be manually approved and activated, so make sure we can recognize you.

This service is reserved for Ascension employees, contractors, students and others affiliated with Ascension Health Care.   We will not respond to outside requests for personal accounts.

Q: How do I use PubMed if the AW Library login has changed? Do I need to create an account with TDNet before using the AW Library resources?

Question: I would like to use PubMed but it seems the library log in has changed.

Does our library page now go through TDNetDiscover?
Do I need to create an account with them before I can use the Ascension library resources?

Answer:
PubMed uses a special url to tap into our Ascension Wisconsin fulltext:

As of January 2023, our new AW Library home page is
Feel free to bookmark this page, or save it to your favorites for easy access.
The new platform is on TDNet.

  • You do NOT need to set up a personal account with TDNet, unless you are working offsite.     A TDNet personal account does make things easier if want to order articles, or take advantage of some other personalized features.
  • You can order articles anonymously through the new library pages (TDNet), but you'd have to enter your contact info every time.  Whereas having a TDNet personal account will automatically populate your contact info when ordering an article or requesting other library services.
  • If accessing remotely (working from home), you will also need to make sure you're using a VPN or Citrix for authentication to our databases.
  • If you are using a work computer on site, everything related to library access should be seamless.

Let me know if you have additional questions.  I'm here to help!

Clinically Useful Journals Subset and How You can Use It to Limit PubMed Search Results to the Most Clinically Relevant Citations

In 2020, PubMed eliminated the AIM / Core Clinical Journals subset / filter because it had not been reviewed or updated in a very long time.  The Abridged Index Medicus (AIM) was the list of journals covered in the  hardcopy publication “Abridged Index Medicus”, which ceased with the December 1997 issue.  Until early 2020, the AIM  journal list was also used online as a search subset limit or filter called "Core Clinical Journals" in PubMed.

For those of us who frequently search PubMed, this should have been a handy filter to limit search results to be more useful and practical for Clinicians taking care of patients with common health conditions.  However, because the journal subset had not been updated in many years, its utility was limited.

research study showed that

  • only 30% of clinically-used articles were from the 50- year-old CCJ filter and
  • only 16% of clinically-used journals were represented in Core titles

The list desperately needed an update.

Fortunately, Michele Klein-Fedyshin and a team of Health Science Librarians (along with a statistician) worked to update the list using current best evidence and real world clinical usage data.  With their careful analysis, some titles fell off the list; Others were added covering entirely new medical specialties (gastroenterology, urology, etc.) not recognized in the old core journals list.

And thus was born: The Clinically Useful Journals List

PubMed declined to officially implement this updated filter, saying that it needs to be continuously reviewed and updated for NLM to adopt it.  But there is another option:

Similar to NLM's DIY workaround for the retired Nursing Journals Filter, individuals can save the following search strategy in MyNCBI and apply it when needed.

Watch the video on How to Save PubMed Searches to learn how to save and maintain your own topic-specific PubMed searches.    Copy and paste the strategy below ...

You only need to copy and save this search strategy once in your MyNCBI in order to pull it up again in future when you need it.

Question: What happened to the Pain Management and Opioid Prescribing Guides?

 Answer:

Good question!  Pain Management  and Opioid Prescribing  are no longer on the AW Library platform because when we switched to the new website in January 2023, Peggy Lutz, our AW Pain Clinician, re-made those pages on the local AW Intranet.    We DO include links to Pain Management and Opioid Prescribing because we know how are important they are for your work.

It is a little tricky to find on the Good Day Ascension WI intranet.

Here's a direct link:

    >  Peggy includes resources for Opioid Prescribing there, too.

Question: Do you have any Integrative Medicine Resources?

Answer: Yes!  We have a variety of resources covering integrative and complementary medicine.

Integrative Medicine [ebook] by David Rakel. c2023 via Clinical Key. [Brand new ed!]

Although we don't have any other ebooks solely devoted to integrative medicine, many of our ebooks have chapters or sections on this topic:

     *  See results on integrative medicine chapters from AccessMedicine.

We also have the following databases that focus on integrative medicine and complementary therapies:

Additionally, DynaMed provides info on herbal and other integrative therapies such as acupuncture included in topic overviews.

Nursing Reference Center also provides many evidence-based care sheets on complementary and alternative medicine in the context of specific health conditions.  [See the one on Migraines shown below:]

Another good source of CAM info is the Resources for Health Care Providers from The National Centers for Complementary & Integrative Health (National Institutes of Health)
